Often asked Questions and our replies
Questions are essential in everything we do. Without them, nothing is possible. I know, pretty deep for this time of the day…..
Below is a bunch of questions we have been asked at least a few dozen times so we figure they are worth writing down.
If you don’t see the answer to your particular question, please get in touch so we can quickly google it and sound like we know what we are talking about….. And yes, we are kidding about the googling thing, but not the getting in touch part. Here is a button to press so you can do just that.
General questions
Are the Chemicals you use safe?
Yes, when used correctly they are safe. We take every care when using chemicals in your home and will explain any precautions you need to take before, during and after treatment.
If the chemicals are safe, why do you wear gloves, mask and overalls?
We must follow the requirements outlined on the product label which stipulates what PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) must be used. We also have a much higher level of exposure than the average person as we are using the products day in day out.
Are you licenced to preform your work?
Yes, I have a Pest Management Technicians licence issued by the Queensland Health Department and a QBCC Licence that allows me to perform Termite work in Queensland.
Can I just buy the stuff off you and do it myself?
No, we use premium products that require a sound knowledge of their proper use. Like any substance they can be dangerous if used incorrectly and I’m sure there would be a heap of paperwork if I sold some to you and you did something to put yourself or your family at risk.
Pest control
Do I need to empty my cupboards before you get here?
No, We can normally treat your cupboards without emptying the contents safely and effectively. If we find an issue that requires more access, we will let you know and work with you to achieve a positive result.
Do I need to leave the property while you treat?
There are exclusion periods for the products we use but that means you need to be in another area during treatment and just need to wait until any wet products have dried before going back into that area. There is normally no need to leave the premises unless you feel more comfortable doing so. We will run though all of this with you prior to starting any treatment.
What should I do before you get here to make sure things are ready?
There are a couple of things to be aware of before we arrive. If we are spraying the outside of the building, we don’t want to spray things that shouldn’t be sprayed. There needs to be no washing on the line, toys and other stored items moved away from walls if possible and pet bowls and bedding removed from near the walls.
Inside if we are spraying we need to have the base of the walls clear of stored items and toys where possible (don’t try to shift heavy items or furniture), Any mopping you want to do that day should be done prior to arrival otherwise you can do that the following day after the chemical has fully dried. Don’t worry if you are unable to achieve all of this as we are more than happy to help out and will work out a way around things if needed.
Can I mop after you have sprayed?
If you are unable to mop before we do the internal spray, we prefer to leave it until the next day when we know it will be completely dry. When you do mop next after the treatment, we recommend not mopping right up to the wall as it is a low traffic area and wont need as much attention. This way the chemical will last longer where it needs to be.
Termite control
Termites don’t eat hardwood do they?
Have a look at our native bushland the next time you are going for a drive, you will see a heap of lovely native eucalypts. This is a termites natural food source. If you put a lump of soft wood and a lump of hardwood in front of a termite, sure it will go for the softwood first. The same as if you put a bowl of lollies and a bowl of vegetables in front of a 4 year old, its bye-bye lollies. But once the lollies are gone and they are hungry enough, that hard wood begins to look pretty tasty…
I have a steel or treated timber frame, so do I really need an inspection?
A steel wall frame is great as termites cant structurally compromise your home. But if you have a look around and see your skirtings, architraves, window reveals, kitchen cupboards, bathroom vanities, wardrobe shelving, carpet tack strips are made from a timber product, they can still make a costly mess. They can even eat the paper off your plasterboard and the rubber insulation off the wiring in the walls. 120 million years of practice makes them pretty good at what they do.
I have a physical termite barrier installed in my house, how does it work? Do I need to have inspections still?
There are many different types/brands of physical termite barriers and they all work in the same basic way. They are a modern version of the old fashioned ant cap on a timber pier under an old Queenslander. They are designed to force the termites out into the open and help prevent “concealed access” They do not repel termites from you house. And if they have been covered or compromised in any way, termites will still be able to make entry into your home. Regular inspections are essential to maintain a physical termite barrier and if the termites are a high threat to the building, further treatment may be necessary even with the physical barrier in place. If you are unsure, please contact us for a “Free in house termite advice” session and we can run through your individual situation.
How long on average does it take to do a termite inspection?
Depending on the size of the house and what existing termite management is already in place, it can vary considerably. But to give an example, an average size 3-4 bedroom house with a roof void, gardens to check and no current termite treatment in place would take us between 1.5 & 2hrs to complete. If you would like to know more detail about your house, please just give us a shout.
