There are approximately 1400 known ant species in Australia. Ants are a pest when they infest building and surrounds. Never heard of a silverfish? Not surprising – It is not a ‘scary’ insect. It is not going to bite you or unexpectedly jump out at you. They will however quietly destroy your stuff. Silverfish are harmless enough to humans but they can destroy books, old papers & photos, wallpaper, carpets and clothes with their droppings. They also love to make unsealed pasta, oat and cereal packets their home, so you’ll want to get rid of them quickly. They are also a food source of other predator insects like cockroaches, spiders, earwigs and centipedes. So if you manage Silverfish numbers it will also help manage the other pests in the home.

One of the most feared creatures in the world, they bite, are intense looking and often come out of nowhere. When you think of Rats and Mice you might think Ratatouille or Rescue Rangers – if that is the case… we see you. However we know you are here for some of the most common pests in the world. There are three main rodents pests in South East Queensland – the Norway Rat (Sewer Rat/Brown Rat), the Roof Rate (Ship Rat) and the House Mouse (Field Mouse). What’s with all the different names? – these three rodents are the most common across the whole world and they can be known by different names. Why are they so common? Well as rodents they are highly mobile, reproduce at extreme levels and are highly adaptive. Both rats and mice are able to squeeze themselves through gaps and spaces that seem impossible. A mouse can get through a small, 6-7 mm hole (about the diameter of a normal-sized pen) and a rat can get through a 20 mm gap. Not to mention, softer substrates such as wood, plasterboard and plastics can be enlarged in minutes if there is an initial small hole to provide an edge.

These are pest that you guessed it – hang out in and destroy carpet. How many of us have carpet in our home. Most of us. It is a big asset, and it is worth protecting. Carpet Moth

Are you getting bald patches at the edge of your carpets? It might be carpet moths. Carpet Moths need to be treated immediately as it will continue to get worse. Carpet moths might be relatively harmless, but their larvae will do a massive amount of damage. The eggs hatch in the carpet and then the destruction begins. Larvae are a long-term problem as they can exist for a whopping two years. That is a lot of time and damage – once you see the moths the damage is already done- but not over as those moths will be laying eggs. These moths will attack anything made from an animal textile that has hair, fur, feathers, or wool. This can include Wall tapestries, rugs, furniture, clothing and even wool wall & roof insulation. Carpet Beetle

There are two main types of carpet beetle; black carpet beetles and variegated carpet beetles. While adult beetles are problematic, it is the beetle larvae that will do all the damage. However Carpet Beetle is nonconfined to just carpet. The larvae can damage furnishings, clothes and other personal textile items. The carpet beetle larvae eat all types of animal fibres not just woollen carpets, rugs and clothes, but also fur, silk, felt, feathers and leather. When dealing with a carpet beetle problem you need to find the site of the infestation. This is not always as easy as 1, 2, 3. It may involve some searching both high in the roof void or low in the sub floor. It can also sometimes be a bit gross as the beetles may have found a dead animal to feed on. Pantry Moths go by many other names like Weevil Moth, Indian Meal Moth, Flour Moth or Grain Moth. Like all the other bugs in the area they like it hot – the weather that is. During the warmer months you may see an increase in the rise of the Pantry Moth. However with the recent mild winters you should still be vigilant during the winter months. Pantry Moths love to eat a wide range of food including vegetables, cereals, pasta, rice, bread, dried fruit, nuts and spices. Without proactive measures and treatment, they can soon get out of control. They also move quickly when it comes to reproduction – laying as many as 400 eggs at a time! You can imagine your pantry can get over run quickly. Eggs are easy to identify – they are small round white eggs about 0.5mm in diameter. Once they hatch they larvae or caterpillars are cream coloured with a dark head growing up to 2cm long and leave tracks across foods and containers. Once the larvae are ready to pupate into an adult moth, they will head for a higher area and spin a small cocoon approx. 1.5cm long and grey in colour. These can be easily spotted under shelving or in the corner of the ceiling. The adult moth is half an inch long and has a wingspan of just over half an inch with brown speckles spotted over the body of the moth.

Once you see them they are probably already set in and there is a infestation in your pantry. Now you will be tempted to spray the pantry head to toe with fly spray – please hold off. Wasps – they sting, they swarm, they are probably in or near your home. Talk about anxiety inducing. How many times have you been relaxing outside and a wasp comes flying in and you don’t know which way they are going to go… too many I am guessing. Wasps have narrow waists, with four wings, and have smooth and shiny skin. They may be brightly coloured, and usually have black and yellow patterns.
